The Louw family bought the farm Klipdrif in 1994. A previous
owner, Major Jacobus Petrus Marais started the cultivation
of grapes on this farm and built one of the first cellars
in the Robertson valley. His Southern Liquor Company developed
the now famous Klipdrif Brandy. He was buried in a favourite
spot of his, a hill from where he used to look out over his
farm. Major Marais was commemorated in the name Majors Hill
Winery. Major’s Rest Guest House was built next to the
old Majors favourite spot, on the hill overlooking some of
the estate’s vineyards right up to the Breede River. |
